When you hear 'birth affirmations,' you might think of yoga or spirituality. We did too, and thought we didn't need them. But we were wrong. Our first birth experience was difficult, but using birth affirmations during our second labor made all the difference—even during a 24-hour labor.

Birth affirmation cards, a popular tool for expectant parents, are filled with encouraging statements that enhance mental well-being, emotional strength, and a positive birth experience during labor and delivery.

What Are Birth Affirmation Cards?

Birth affirmation cards are small, portable items containing uplifting messages aimed at motivating and inspiring expecting parents, especially laboring moms. Phrases like “I trust my body to do this” or “Every contraction brings me closer to my baby” help focus on positivity, easing anxiety and fear associated with childbirth.

The beauty here is that birth affirmation cards can be seamlessly included in any birth plan, whether preparing for home or hospital delivery. Couples have the power to select affirmations that resonate deeply with their experiences, making the journey feel personal and special.

How Can Affirmation Cards Enhance the Birth Experience

Research shows that keeping a positive mindset can profoundly affect labor. We experienced this firsthand—our second birth was so much smoother because of the kind, encouraging words we used. In fact, a study published in the journal Birth found that women who used positive affirmations experienced less pain and anxiety during labor. Yes, less pain! During labor, the brain shifts into a different state, much like during meditation, which means it's more receptive to positive suggestions. It feels like the brain is almost designed to absorb these messages at that crucial time.

Specific Benefits of Birth Affirmation Cards

  • Promotes Positive Thinking: Affirmations help combat negative inner dialogue by fostering an optimistic mindset.

  • Encourages Connection: Reading affirmations together strengthens the bond between partners, building a sense of teamwork.

  • Serves as Reminders: During the chaos of labor, affirmation cards are a quick way to refocus and stay calm.

  • Reduces Fear and Anxiety: Affirmations replace anxiety with a sense of empowerment, helping couples mentally prepare for the journey.

How to Incorporate Affirmation Cards into Your Birth Plan

Adding birth affirmation cards to your prenatal routine can be easy and really enjoyable. Here are some practical suggestions for strengthening this practice:

  • Select Your Affirmations Together: As a couple, take time choosing affirmations that resonate with both of you. For instance, if one partner feels anxious about the delivery, they might choose an affirmation that specifically addresses that fear. Personalizing the cards makes them more impactful.

  • Create a Display Area: Designate a space in your birthing area to display the cards prominently. This could be a small corner of your room or a section of your birthing team’s space. Keeping the cards visible serves as a constant reminder of your desired mindset.

  • Practice Daily: Incorporate a routine of reading the cards aloud each day. This practice reinforces the positive messages, making them habitual. Research shows that just spending a few minutes each day with affirmations can improve readiness for labor.

  • Share with Your Birth Team: Make sure to inform members of your birthing team about your affirmations. When they know your intentions, they can support you during labor by reminding you of these messages.

Begin crafting your birth affirmations during pregnancy

We recommend starting now if you're pregnant. Pregnancy is a unique journey, and every birth is different—some are quiet and calm, while others are full of excitement. The one constant is YOU: what you want to hear and who you are at your core. While parts of you will change to become a mother, you will still be yourself. Certain phrases and words will resonate deeply and bring you comfort. So instead of relying on random affirmations from others, make a list of words that truly speak to you during pregnancy, as they will likely be just as effective during labor. This worked well for us, and we think it will for you too.

Once you have your affirmations, share them with your partner throughout pregnancy and highlight the most important ones. This way, when labor begins, they are familiar and comfortable. It’s important for your partner to feel confident, so their support can be reassuring rather than hesitant.

Making your birth affirmation cards easy to use

There are plenty of adorable options out there. You could use something like Canva to create aesthetically pleasing cards with a photo of your baby’s sonogram and a list of affirmations on the side. If you know your baby's name, add it to the top; if not, use 'Baby (Last Name).' This makes it easy for anyone to support you during labor, even if your partner steps out briefly and a nurse is there to help.

If you don't want to use physical cards

If you prefer a digital approach, there are plenty of options available. We’re one of those couples who found writing things down a bit outdated, so we used our phones. Apps like Notes or Google Docs work well. But if you want something more comprehensive, consider downloading 'DudeDoula.' It has a contraction timer, labor mode, a help section, labor checklist, and a list of affirmations all in one place. We created it, so no advertising gimmicks here—just something practical for couples who prefer digital tools.
